North Symphony Youth Orchestra

The NSYO was first formed in 1983 as a community-based organisation run by parent volunteers. Based in Beecroft in Northern Sydney, the NSYO is comprised of Strings & Sinfonia, the Wind Ensemble  and the Symphony Orchestra. We support more than 160 talented young musicians aged 5 to 25 years to develop musical and orchestral skills, and to experience the thrill of playing in live concerts.

The Conductor

David Griffin has been directing the NSYO Symphony since 2006. David studied conducting with a colourful range of international maestros: from Imre Palló, Henryk Pisarek, Harry Spence Lyth and James Lockhardt. His professional conducting experience includes work in a diverse array of orchestral music, music theatre, choral
music, film music, early music and contemporary music.

For 16 years he served as conductor of Fisher’s Ghost Youth Orchestra in South-West Sydney, and 10 years as an Ensemble Director to Roseville College on Sydney’s North Shore. He has also worked as both a classroom teacher and ensemble director at several other schools including St.Catherine’s Waverley, International Grammar School, Italian Bilingual School Sydney, and Sydney Girls School.

Over the years, David has served as guest conductor for many other organisations such as Chronology Arts, The Fellowship Of Australian Composers, Sydney Conservatorium Modern Music Ensemble, Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic, Sydney Saxophone Collective, Barker College, Strathfield Symphony Orchestra and the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra.
